According to The Financial News, a foreign passenger who took a taxi was arrested by police after directing a stream of verbal abuse and profanity at the driver on the way to his destination.
On the 4th, the JTBC program "Case Chief" featured the story of Mr. A, who works as a taxi driver in Seoul.
Mr. A said he picked up a male passenger of Nigerian nationality near Hongdae on the 23rd of last month.
The passenger was reportedly drunk when he got into the taxi. Mr. A entered the destination address in Gongdeok-dong into the navigation system and began driving there.
However, about five minutes after departure, the passenger suddenly began demanding, "Make a U-turn."
In response, Mr. A explained, "You can't make a U-turn here," adding, "I'm following the navigation route right now."
At that point, the passenger started unleashing a torrent of verbal abuse and profanity at Mr. A.
The passenger shouted insults such as "Are you f***ing stupid?" and other vulgar, unprintable phrases, repeatedly swearing at him. Feeling threatened by the man's large build and his uncontrollable rampage, Mr. A eventually called the police.
Even after the police arrived at the scene, the passenger continued his disruptive behavior.
He shouted, "It only costs 8,500 won to get to my house," and refused to get out of the taxi while continuing to cause a disturbance.
The passenger was arrested on the spot by responding officers on suspicion of obstructing business.
Prosecutors who took over the case are reported to have recently issued a summary indictment against the passenger.
Mr. A lamented, saying, "I was just following the navigation, but he got angry and yelled at me for 'taking a detour,' which felt really unfair."
