The government has recognized an additional 501 cases of jeonse fraud victims. This brings the cumulative number of confirmed jeonse fraud victim cases to 36,950.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on the 4th that it convened the Jeonse Fraud Damage Support Committee three times last month, reviewed a total of 1,163 cases, and finally approved 501 of them as jeonse fraud victims or related victims.
Of the 501 approved cases, 478 were new applications, including reapplications, while 23 were cases in which additional damage requirements were confirmed through appeals against previous decisions.
Among the cases reviewed, 406 were rejected for failing to meet the criteria for damage recognition. Another 137 were excluded because it was determined that the full deposit could be recovered through guarantee insurance, preferential repayment amounts, or similar means. A total of 119 appeals were dismissed for not meeting the necessary requirements.
To date, the cumulative number of recognized jeonse fraud victim cases stands at 36,950, and there have been 1,108 requests for emergency suspension of auctions and public sales. A total of 59,655 instances of housing, financial, and legal support have been provided to victims.
Purchases of homes affected by jeonse fraud by Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) are also increasing. LH has so far acquired 6,475 such homes, 5,714 of which were purchased after the launch of the new administration in June last year.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and LH plan to speed up the purchase of affected homes through purchase review meetings and a fast-track process, while continuing consultations with the courts on auction procedures to help stabilize housing for victims.
Tenants who have suffered damage from jeonse fraud can apply for official recognition as victims to the city or provincial government with jurisdiction over their residence. Once recognized as victims, they can receive financial, legal, and housing support through the Jeonse Damage Support Center operated by the Korea Housing & Urban Guarantee Corporation (HUG).
