\r\n[The Financial News] The US military stated that, just two days after launching a large-scale military operation against the Islamic Republic of Iran, it has destroyed all 11 Iranian vessels operating in the Gulf of Oman. It claims that Iran’s naval power in the waters connected to the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil shipping route, has been effectively neutralized.
CENTCOM announced on the 2nd (local time) via the social media platform X, "Just two days ago, the Iranian regime had 11 vessels in the Gulf of Oman, and today that number is zero."
The United States has targeted the Islamic Republic of Iran Navy as a primary objective in the military operation that began on the 28th of last month. President Donald Trump said the previous day that US forces had sunk nine vessels and almost destroyed the Iranian Navy headquarters, and the US military explained that the remaining two ships were subsequently eliminated.
CENTCOM stated, "For decades, the Iranian regime has harassed and attacked international maritime shipping in the Gulf of Oman," adding, "That era is now over. Freedom of navigation at sea has underpinned the economic prosperity of the United States and the world for more than 80 years, and US forces will continue to defend it."
The Gulf of Oman connects to the Strait of Hormuz and serves as a gateway for Middle Eastern crude oil bound for Asia and Europe. Relying on its naval presence in the area, the Islamic Republic of Iran has long used the threat of closing the strait to pressure the international community and has attacked vessels transiting nearby waters. Numerous oil tankers are reported to have come under attack even after the latest clashes began.
If the US account is accurate, Iran’s ability to blockade the strait may have been significantly weakened. However, tensions are expected to persist for the time being, as the possibility cannot be ruled out that Iran will resort to asymmetric capabilities, missiles, naval mines, or other means.
