Financial News reported that the US and Israel have launched attacks on Iran.
On the 28th local time, US President Donald Trump said in a video posted on social media that the two countries had begun attacks and entered a major combat operation against the Iranian regime. He called on the people of Iran to overthrow their government.
Trump emphasized, "Our goal is to eliminate the threat from the Iranian regime and protect the American people."
The United States Department of Defense (DoD) announced on X (formerly Twitter) that an operation codenamed "Operation Epic of Fury" had begun.
Foreign media, including the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), reported sightings of explosions and smoke in Tehran, the capital of Iran.
With the launch of the military operation raising fears of a wider conflict in the Middle East, sources said the two countries are expected to carry out intensive strikes over the coming days.
Israel Katz, the Israeli Minister of Defense, stated that the Israeli military had also begun airstrikes and announced the immediate declaration of a state of emergency across Israel.
Israel and Iran engaged in military clashes for 12 days in June last year.
Ahead of the latest airstrikes, the US had reinforced major military assets, including aircraft carriers, near Iran.
Trump had repeatedly warned that Iran could face military action if it did not halt its nuclear development program.
On the 17th, JD Vance, Vice President of the United States, stated that the proposals Iran made during two rounds of negotiations had failed to meet US demands.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) also announced that, in response to the attacks, it had launched drones and missiles toward what it called "the stolen land."
The New York Times reported that Iran’s supreme leader, Ali Hosseini Khamenei, had left Tehran and taken refuge in a secure location.
