According to Financial News, President Lee Jae-myung on the 28th reviewed the impact of the situation in the Islamic Republic of Iran on South Korea and ordered that the safety of Korean nationals in Iran and neighboring regions be secured as the highest priority.
Spokesperson Kang Yu-jeong of Cheong Wa Dae (the Blue House) stated in a press notice that day, "President Lee received a briefing on the situation in the Islamic Republic of Iran and reviewed its impact on South Korea and related countermeasures, while instructing that the safety of our Korean nationals in Iran and nearby areas be treated as the top priority."
According to foreign media reports, the State of Israel on the 28th local time launched a missile strike against the Islamic Republic of Iran, describing it as a "preemptive strike." Explosions and plumes of smoke were reported in downtown Tehran, the Iranian capital.
In anticipation of possible retaliation, Israel sounded air-raid sirens across its territory and implemented emergency measures such as shutting down workplaces and closing schools. The attack reportedly took place amid ongoing difficulties in the United States–Iran nuclear negotiations.
The direct military clash between Israel and Iran is the first in about eight months since the Iran–Israel War, also known as the Twelve-Day War, last June. Foreign media reported that explosions also occurred near the office of Supreme Leader Ali Hosseini Khamenei, but his whereabouts at the time were not confirmed.
