The People Power Party has urged the Lee Jae-myung administration to revise its North Korea policy, arguing that it is undermining South Korea’s security. In a commentary issued on the 28th by senior spokesperson Park Sung-hoon, the party criticized that what has come back in response to the Lee administration’s persistent overtures toward Kim Jong Un is only mockery and intimidation.
The People Power Party stated, "The Lee Jae-myung administration must end its servile, one-sided infatuation with North Korea that brings neither justification nor practical benefit," adding, "What the public wants is not abstract declarations, but real peace built on firm security."
The party continued, "Since Kim Jong Un himself has flatly dismissed the possibility of exchange and cooperation with South Korea, there is virtually no chance that North Korea will come to the table with us in the near term," and stressed, "What is more, the Lee administration has preemptively handed over what Pyongyang wants—such as halting loudspeaker broadcasts toward the North, recognizing its nuclear status, and pushing to restore the September 19 inter-Korean military agreement—so there is no reason left for North Korea to engage in dialogue at all."
In a report to the party congress on the 26th, Kim Jong Un threatened that he would "permanently exclude South Korea from the category of fellow countrymen" and that "the possibility of South Korea’s complete collapse cannot be ruled out." He also lashed out at the Lee Jae-myung administration’s conciliatory stance, calling it a deceptive charade and a botched production.
The People Power Party argued, "From the very start of its term, the Lee Jae-myung administration has gone so far as to undermine our own security interests by halting loudspeaker broadcasts toward the North and effectively recognizing its nuclear status, all while embarrassingly begging Pyongyang for dialogue," adding, "On top of that, this administration, which says it will pursue the transfer of Wartime Operational Control (OPCON), has once again this year, following last year, scaled back the South Korea–U.S. joint military exercise so as not to provoke North Korea." The party said that talking about OPCON transfer while actually reducing the joint exercises that are a precondition for it is not autonomy but mere irresponsibility.
The party stressed that North Korea has never abandoned its hostile ambitions even for a moment and that it only stages inter-Korean dialogue shows when it suits its own needs.
It further condemned that, once its demands are met, North Korea brazenly turns its back and carries out despicable military provocations, heightening tensions—a pattern it said has remained consistent over the past 80 years.
Meanwhile, KCNA reported the same day that Kim Jong Un had presented newly developed sniper rifles as gifts to key party officials and military commanders. North Korean media even released images of his 13-year-old daughter Kim Ju Ae aiming and firing the rifle. Not only Kim Ju Ae, but also Kim Jong Un’s younger sister Kim Yo Jong, director of the Workers' Party of Korea, and other party officials received the new rifles as gifts.
KCNA also reported on the 28th that on the 27th, President of the State Affairs Commission Kim Jong Un presented newly developed sniper rifles and weapon certificates to newly elected senior officials, including Director of the General Affairs Department Kim Yo Jong, and then took commemorative photos at an outdoor shooting range after target practice with his daughter Kim Ju Ae and the officials.
