[Financial News] Park Yong-jin, a former lawmaker seen as a potential Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) candidate for Seoul mayor, has proposed relocating Gimpo International Airport and building 200,000 housing units on the site. Relocating Gimpo International Airport was one of the campaign pledges made by President Lee Jae-myung when he ran in the 20th presidential election.
On the 27th, Park wrote on social media, "There is land in the heart of Seoul where we can supply 200,000 homes," adding, "It is not a redevelopment project, and there will be no compensation disputes. It is the Gimpo International Airport site."
He argued, "We should relocate and integrate Gimpo International Airport into Incheon International Airport and create a 200,000-unit smart city with a floor area ratio of 600%." As expected benefits, he cited balanced development in Southwestern Seoul, a chain of redevelopment projects triggered by the lifting of height restrictions, transportation improvements based on the Great Train eXpress Line D (GTX-D) and GTX-E Line, the creation of a future industrial city centered on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Urban Air Mobility (UAM), and the stabilization of housing costs in Seoul.
Addressing concerns about the lack of a downtown airport and insufficient domestic flights, he added, "I fully understand worries that Jeju residents might be inconvenienced, so we will draw up plans to expand the GTX transport network and use smart city development profits to support transportation costs for Jeju residents."
Relocating Gimpo International Airport was one of the pledges Lee Jae-myung made in the 2022 20th presidential election as the DPK candidate. The plan called for moving and integrating Gimpo International Airport into Incheon International Airport and developing the vacated airport site.
