[The Financial News] Yoo Byung-ho, a commissioner at the Board of Audit and Inspection who is accused of leaking military secrets during the BAI's audit and announcement on the killing of a public official in the Yellow Sea, appeared before police as a suspect for the first time on the 26th.
The Anti-Corruption Investigation Unit of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency is questioning Yoo on the morning of the 26th on charges including violating the Military Secret Protection Act.
Arriving at the Mapo Office of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency Metropolitan Investigation Unit at around 10:13 a.m., Yoo told reporters, "Conducting an audit of the Yellow Sea shooting case and making it public was natural and justified," adding, "There is not a single secret there that the public should not know." He went on, "I will faithfully speak about the various illegal and improper acts committed by the BAI task force."
Asked why he pushed ahead with distributing the materials despite internal opposition, he dismissed the allegation as "false" and entered the building.
Earlier, on the 3rd, police raided the BAI headquarters in Jongno District, Seoul, and seized related materials. The search was conducted in connection with a case in which the Task Force for Innovation in the Operation of the Board of Audit and Inspection filed a complaint against seven people, including former BAI chief Choi Jae-hae and Commissioner Yoo.
They are suspected of leaking level-2 military secrets in the process of distributing a press release on the audit results of the killing of a public official in the Yellow Sea in December 2023, during the Yoon Suk Yeol administration. After receiving the complaint, police booked them as suspects and have been investigating.
At a regular press briefing on the 9th, Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency Commissioner Park Jeong-bo stated, "We are analyzing the items seized in the search, and we plan to summon the suspects one by one," adding, "We have sent summons notices and are coordinating specific dates."
Following the questioning of Yoo, police are expected to summon former BAI chief Choi and the remaining suspects in sequence.
Separately, Yoo has also been accused of abuse of authority and obstruction of official duties for allegedly inspecting employees who opposed him and placing them on standby.
