[Financial News] A man who was arrested for stealing only high-priced Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) components reportedly told police that he had "followed the advice of generative AI."
Pyeongtaek Police Station announced on the 25th that it had applied for an arrest warrant for a man identified as A on charges of aggravated theft.
A is accused of breaking into a computer parts store in Cheongbuk-eup, Pyeongtaek-si, at around 5:56 a.m. on the 22nd and stealing three boxes of GPUs worth about 17 million won in total before fleeing. He allegedly used a hammer drill to smash the entrance door, went into the store, quickly grabbed the items, and ran off.
By the time he was arrested, A had already sold two of the three stolen GPU boxes through an online secondhand marketplace at prices far below the going market rate.
A GPU normally priced in the 7 million won range and another in the 2.7 million won range were reportedly sold for 4.9 million won and 1 million won, respectively.
Police recovered one remaining box of GPUs worth about 8 million won that had not yet been sold and are tracking down the whereabouts of the stolen goods that have already entered circulation.
