[Financial News] The KOSPI has climbed above the 6,000 level for the first time in its history. The "six-thousand-point" era has begun just one month after it first reached the 5,000 level.
At 9:20 a.m. on the 25th, the KOSPI was trading at 6,006.84, up 37.20 points (0.62%) from the previous session.
The index opened at 6,022.70, up 0.89% from the previous close, hitting the 6,000 mark as soon as the market opened. Shortly after the open, it climbed as high as 6,039.18, setting a new intraday record.
With this, the KOSPI has rewritten history by gaining more than 1,000 points in just over a month since it first broke through the 5,000 level during trading on January 22.
In the Korea Exchange Securities Market (KOSPI market), individual investors are net buyers of 1.45 trillion won, driving the index higher. Foreign investors and institutions are showing net selling of 878.5 billion won and 595 billion won, respectively.
Among large-cap stocks by market capitalization, Samsung Electronics is up 1.25%, SK hynix is up 0.5%, and Hyundai Motor is up 4.77%. In contrast, LG Energy Solution is down 0.36% and Samsung Biologics is down 0.29%.
By sector, construction is strong with a gain of 4.55%, while transportation equipment and parts are up 2.28%, and electricity and gas are up 2.27%. Pharmaceuticals are weak, down 0.99%, along with entertainment and culture down 0.93%, and food, beverages and tobacco down 0.9%.
Overnight, U.S. stocks managed to rebound despite a sharp drop in SanDisk on concerns over intensifying SSD competition and comments from the White House about imposing a global 15% tariff. The market was supported by positive news such as a five-year contract between Meta and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), and Anthropic forming partnerships with existing software platforms.
Han Ji-young, a researcher at Kiwoom Securities, said, "The KOSPI is expected to break through the 6,000 level during the session today, helped by the rebound in U.S. stocks as concerns over the artificial intelligence (AI) industry ease." Han added, "While sentiment is now building for the index to move beyond 6,000 to an even higher level, the recent intensification of buying concentration by specific investor groups could be a short-term concern."
At the same time, the KOSDAQ index was trading at 1,164.89, down 0.11 points (0.01%) from the previous session. The index opened at 1,174.27, up 9.27 points (0.8%) from the prior close.
In the KOSDAQ market, individual investors are net buyers of 247.8 billion won. Foreign investors and institutions are net sellers of 202.6 billion won and 29.6 billion won, respectively.
