[Financial News] Teenagers who posted death threats against President Lee Jae-myung on an online message board have been handed over to the prosecution.
SMPA announced on the 24th that two male teenagers have been referred to the prosecution without detention on charges of making threats and obstructing official duties by deception.
According to police, the two are accused of posting a message on the 119 Safety Report Center’s online board on September 4 last year, threatening to kill President Lee Jae-myung.
During the investigation, police additionally confirmed that suspect A had written a separate death threat targeting students at a high school in Asan, South Chungcheong Province, in March last year. As a result, A was also referred on charges of public intimidation and obstructing official duties by deception.
Police are continuing to investigate two more cases of public intimidation in which A allegedly posted threatening messages targeting students at a high school in Incheon and a middle school in Gwangju.
SMPA is reviewing whether to file a damages claim against the suspects.
A police official stressed, "Led by our task force on public intimidation and related offenses (TF), we will continue to track down threats targeting unspecified members of the public to the end and impose strict punishment in accordance with the law."
Meanwhile, SMPA has been operating a response TF since November last year, bringing together five units including cyber investigation, criminal investigation, public crime investigation, and a mobile investigation team.
