[Financial News] Elon Musk, the world’s richest person and chief executive of Tesla and Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX), is reportedly interested in acquiring the Super Bowl champion franchise in the National Football League (NFL).
On the 22nd (local time), sports news site HITC reported that posts are spreading on social media claiming Musk is interested in buying the Super Bowl–winning Seattle Seahawks.
Musk’s wealth is estimated at about 850 billion dollars, or roughly 1,224 trillion won.
The Seahawks were purchased in 1997 for 194 million dollars by Paul Allen, who co-founded Microsoft with Bill Gates. After his death, his sister Jody Allen took over as team owner and has been planning a sale.
Reports estimate the Seahawks’ value at around 6.59 billion dollars and as high as 100 billion dollars, or about 144 trillion won.
Besides Musk, Jeff Bezos, who founded Amazon in Seattle, and Bill Gates have also been mentioned as potential buyers.
Bezos in particular has repeatedly shown interest in purchasing an NFL team.
Another strong contender is Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison, who was reported to have shown interest in acquiring the team when Paul Allen passed away in 2018.
Former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz, and Bezos’s ex-wife MacKenzie Scott have also been reported as possible bidders.
U.S. media outlets say the rumors of a Musk takeover of the Seahawks lack credibility, but they are paying attention to the fact that his artificial intelligence company xAI has leased an entire floor of an office building in Bellevue, near Seattle.
