[Financial News] Kim Chang-yeol of the group DJ D.O.C. traveled to Japan to counter the “Takeshima Day” event in Shimane Prefecture, which uses Japan’s name for Dokdo, but was denied entry. He currently serves as an Honorary Ambassador for the Dokdo Love Movement Headquarters.
On the 22nd, the Dokdo Love Movement Headquarters announced on its official social media, "We visited Shimane Prefecture on the 19th with Honorary Ambassador Kim Chang-yeol to look around the site where historical distortions about Dokdo are taking place, but we were refused entry."
It continued, "Honorary Ambassador Kim Chang-yeol was expelled back to Korea immediately upon entry due to a drunk driving record from 1999."
The organization added, "We suddenly found ourselves unable to secure a flight back to Korea or even accommodation," and explained, "Airport officials kept saying they were not a 24-hour airport and told us to sort it out with the airline, maintaining an irresponsible attitude throughout."
The headquarters said, "We also asked the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea for help but received none. When a citizen of the Republic of Korea needed their country, the Republic of Korea was nowhere to be found," and stressed, "There had been no problems when visiting other Japanese airports in the past, but this time the refusal of entry, timed with Takeshima Day, is Japan’s political retaliation and targeted screening to block a Dokdo representative’s visit."
It went on, "We strongly condemn this irrational retaliatory measure," and insisted, "Takeshima Day must be abolished, and Japan must apologize at Dokdo without fail."
Speaking to Yonhap News Agency on the 22nd, Kim Chang-yeol said, "I was never told that my activities related to Dokdo were a problem. They simply kept repeating the position that 'for any reason whatsoever, entry is not allowed,'" and added, "In fact, I had no intention of visiting the Takeshima Day event venue itself, nor did I have any specific plans for what to do there, but the Japanese side targeted us and refused us entry."
Meanwhile, Shimane Prefecture unilaterally issued a public notice in February 1905 incorporating Dokdo into its administrative district, and in March 2005, on the 100th anniversary, it enacted an ordinance designating “Takeshima Day.” Since 2006, it has designated February 22 as “Takeshima Day” and has held an annual commemorative event.
