Park Eunsik, acting head of the Korea Forest Service (KFS), on the 22nd chaired a meeting to review wildfire preparedness, attended by directors from KFS headquarters and regional offices. He ordered each agency to strengthen its readiness posture against wildfires.
[Financial News] The Korea Forest Service (KFS) announced on the 22nd that a total of 12 wildfires broke out nationwide on the 21st alone.
It is highly unusual for more than 10 wildfires to occur in a single day in February. Due to a prolonged spell of dry weather combined with strong winds, 12 wildfires erupted across the country, and Level 1 response to wildfire spread was issued for two of them, meaning the impact area exceeded 10 hectares.
KFS stated that, working with the military, fire authorities, police, and local governments, it ensured the rapid evacuation of residents, and no casualties were reported. Mobilizing around 100 helicopters as part of a full-scale response, authorities fully contained 11 of the 12 fires, while the remaining one, which started at night, was still being fought; as of noon on the 22nd, the containment rate stood at 68%.
On the 22nd, two additional wildfires occurred in the morning due to strong winds, but both were extinguished. In the afternoon, a major wildfire advisory is expected to be issued for the East Coast areas of Ulsan, Gangwon Province, and North Gyeongsang Province.
Following the 21st, KFS again held a countermeasure meeting on the morning of the 22nd, chaired by acting head Park Eunsik and attended by directors from headquarters and regional offices. The agency moved to further reinforce wildfire preparedness at each institution.
Park said, "With dry weather compounded by strong winds, the risk of wildfires is extremely high," adding, "We will strengthen our wildfire preparedness and respond with all available resources whenever a fire breaks out to protect people's lives and property from wildfires."
