[Financial News] Hak Ja Han, a key figure in the alleged collusion between the Unification Church and political circles, had been released temporarily under a suspension of detention but will now return to the detention center. She had asked the court to extend the suspension period, but the request was denied.
According to the legal community on the 21st, Criminal Division 27 of the Seoul Central District Court, presided over by Judge Woo In-sung, rejected Hak Ja Han’s request the previous day to extend her suspension of detention.
A suspension of detention is a system that allows a defendant to be temporarily released when there is an urgent reason, such as serious illness, childbirth, or attending a family funeral. On the 11th, the court conditionally granted Hak Ja Han’s application for suspension of detention, which her side had filed citing health issues.
During her temporary release, Hak Ja Han is reported to have received treatment for injuries from a fall that occurred inside the detention center. On the 19th, her legal team asked the court to extend the suspension period. She had also applied for a suspension of detention in November last year, which the court granted, allowing her to be released for three days to receive hospital treatment.
In October last year, Hak Ja Han was indicted and taken into custody on charges that, in January 2022, she conspired with Yoon Young-ho, then head of the Unification Church global headquarters, to deliver 100 million won in political funds to People Power Party lawmaker Kweon Seong-dong while asking him to secure support for the Unification Church from the Yoon Suk Yeol administration.
