At the supreme council meeting, Democratic Party leader Jeong Cheong-rae condemned the life sentence handed down to Yoon the previous day on charges of leading an insurrection, calling it "a clear setback for judicial justice."
Han Byung-do, the party’s floor leader, also criticized the ruling as "a decision far removed from the common sense of the majority of citizens who had hoped for a death sentence," and declared, "We will swiftly pass an amendment to the Pardons Act so that Yoon Suk Yeol, the ringleader of the insurrection, can never walk out past the prison walls."
Under current law, the president may exercise the power to grant pardons to specific individuals without the consent of the National Assembly, a power guaranteed by the Constitution. However, since the 2024 South Korean martial law crisis of December 3, the Democratic Party has introduced multiple amendments to the Pardons Act that would bar such pardons in cases of insurrection and treason.
At the Subcommittee for Bill Review under the National Assembly’s Legislation and Judiciary Committee, which convenes on the 20th, the Democratic Party is expected to push through the amendment to the Pardons Act.
