According to Financial News, Woo Won-shik, Speaker of the National Assembly, stated on the 19th that the life sentence handed down to former President Yoon Suk Yeol in the first-instance trial on insurrection charges "once again confirmed the legal judgment that the December 3 emergency martial law declaration constituted an insurrection."
After watching the televised sentencing hearing for the former president at the National Assembly that day, Woo met with reporters and said, "It has become even clearer that no power can be exercised except within the framework of the Constitution and the law." He urged, "I hope former President Yoon will at least now repent of his wrongdoing and offer a sincere apology to the people."
However, Woo expressed regret over the court’s decision to impose a life sentence.
He said, "The fact that the insurrection failed was treated as a mitigating factor, but the reason it failed was not because it was poorly prepared. It was because the National Assembly and the people joined forces to resist and stop it," adding, "In that respect, I find the ruling regrettable."
