Financial News has learned that a woman in her 20s, surnamed Kim, who is suspected of killing two men in succession by giving them drug-laced drinks, repeatedly asked a generative AI service about the dangers of the drugs before committing the crimes.
On the 19th, the Seoul Gangbuk Police Station stated that, based on this circumstantial evidence, it concluded Kim had intent to kill and referred her to the prosecution service in custody on murder charges.
Kim is accused of giving drinks containing benzodiazepine-based drugs to three men in their 20s between mid-December last year and the 9th of this month, killing two of them and causing one to lose consciousness.
Investigators found that after her first crime, when the victim regained consciousness, Kim made a new drink with a significantly higher dose of the drug.
The police investigation revealed that, even before the crimes, Kim had entered questions into ChatGPT such as "What happens if you take sleeping pills with alcohol?", "How much is dangerous if you take them together?", and "Can it be fatal?"
A police official said, "She asked related questions multiple times and received answers," adding, "She was fully aware that taking alcohol and the drugs together could result in death."
During questioning, Kim admitted, "It is true that I mixed my prescribed psychiatric medication into a hangover cure drink, carried it around, and gave it to the men," but she denied having intent to kill, claiming she did not expect the victims to die.
However, based on Kim's ChatGPT query records and other evidence, police determined that she could fully foresee the possibility that the men might die, and therefore applied murder charges rather than the lesser offense of bodily injury resulting in death.
Over the Lunar New Year holiday, police brought in a criminal profiler to conduct a psychopathy assessment test and interviews, and plan to forward the results to the prosecution service. The assessment is expected to take about ten days.
Kim reportedly told police she has symptoms of depression. A review of her medical records showed that she has in fact received treatment for a mental disorder.
Police also plan to continue investigating whether there are additional victims beyond the three already identified.
