Japan’s Trade Balance Turns to Deficit in January After Three Months; Exports to US Fall for Second Month

Financial News correspondent Seo Hye-jin in Tokyo reported that Japan posted a trade deficit of 1.1526 trillion yen in January, returning to deficit for the first time in three months.
According to the preliminary January trade statistics released by the Ministry of Finance Japan (MOF) on the 18th, last month’s trade balance (exports minus imports) showed a deficit of 1.1526 trillion yen.
Exports rose 16.8% year-on-year to 9.1874 trillion yen, while imports fell 2.5% to 10.3401 trillion yen.
Exports to the United States came to 1.4620 trillion yen, down 5.0% from a year earlier, marking the second consecutive month of decline.
