[Financial News] The court has begun a pilot operation of its own trial support system that uses generative artificial intelligence (Generative AI). Built on the Judiciary’s internal infrastructure, this dedicated AI platform is intended to comprehensively analyze vast amounts of legal information, including precedents and statutes, to support judicial work.
The Supreme Court of Korea announced on the 13th that it had opened the AI trial support system on a trial basis. The system is designed to help judges and court staff find and review the legal materials they need during proceedings more quickly.
The AI uses a wide range of legal documents as training data, including Supreme Court precedents, judgments from lower courts, relevant statutes and Supreme Court rules, various decisions and authoritative interpretations, practical manuals, and annotated commentaries. When a user enters a question, the system analyzes the key legal issues involved, searches for related materials, and provides a summary of the main points.
Unlike simple keyword searches, the system identifies the intent and context of the question and presents highly relevant information. It also provides the underlying precedents or statutes alongside its answers so that users can directly verify the content.
The new system does not rely on publicly available AI services or commercial large language models (LLMs). Instead, it operates on a platform independently built within the court’s internal environment. The Supreme Court of Korea plans to secure the security and independence of judicial information while gradually advancing an AI model tailored specifically to court operations.
However, users remain responsible for the final review and judgment of any answers provided by the AI. Because some responses may contain inaccuracies or require supplementation, a user verification process is also required.
During the pilot phase, the Supreme Court of Korea plans to gather feedback from the field to improve answer accuracy and continuously refine how supporting evidence is presented and how the system functions. A Supreme Court official said, "We plan to keep developing additional features, such as summarizing case overviews and analyzing key issues, so that the AI trial support system can evolve into a tool that provides practical assistance to the court’s work."
