[Financial News] Police investigating the December 29 Jeju Air passenger plane disaster have launched compulsory searches at two locations, including the Busan Regional Office of Aviation.
The special investigation team on the December 29 passenger plane disaster announced that from 9 a.m. on the 12th it has been conducting search and seizure operations at two sites, including the Busan Regional Office of Aviation and a construction-related company. This is the first compulsory investigation since the team was launched and is intended to determine whether there were any factors present when construction began at Muan International Airport that could have contributed to the disaster.
Last month, the National Office of Investigation reorganized the investigation headquarters for the December 29 passenger plane disaster, which had been set up at the Jeonnam Provincial Police Agency, into a special investigation team reporting directly to the head of the National Office of Investigation. The move came amid concerns raised during the National Assembly inquiry into the plane disaster about delays in the investigation, as well as a growing need to investigate not only the crash site but also related institutions and companies located in the greater Seoul area.
Police have booked 45 people on charges including occupational negligence resulting in death or injury in connection with the passenger plane disaster and have been conducting an investigation. The special investigation team has finished reviewing more than 10,000 pages of case files handed over from the previous investigation headquarters and is examining whether the Serious Civil Disaster Act could apply.
