[Financial News] Defector YouTuber Han Song-i has revealed how illegal plastic surgery is carried out inside North Korea.
Fourteen years after fleeing North Korea, Han Song-i appeared in a video posted on the YouTube channel "Everyone Is the Main Character" on the 10th, titled "Basic Requirements for North Korea’s Pleasure Squad."
Jeon Won-ju asked Han Song-i, "What kind of work do pretty women do in North Korea?"
Han Song-i replied, "They either get selected for the so-called pleasure squad," adding, "People like us can’t even get close. You have to be at least 165 centimeters tall."
Jeon Won-ju responded, "I’m not even 150 centimeters..." and wondered aloud, "Are there certain hurdles you have to clear to become part of the pleasure squad?"
Han Song-i explained, "You have to be a dyed-in-the-wool communist from the roots. No matter how tall or pretty you are, if your parents were ginseng landlords in North Korea and your family was condemned as counterrevolutionaries and punished, you can’t go there."
When Jeon Won-ju asked, "Did you get plastic surgery to join the pleasure squad?" Han Song-i joked, "I wasn’t this pretty when I was in North Korea. After coming to South Korea, I started going to dermatology clinics and getting lifting procedures, and that made me prettier."
When Jeon Won-ju asked again, "Is there plastic surgery in North Korea too?" Han Song-i replied, "They do orthodontic work and double-eyelid surgery. In our country, you go to plastic surgery or dermatology clinics for that. In North Korea, they do it at home."
She went on, "There’s a middle-aged woman doing illegal operations at home, with about 10 people lying there. She cuts one side and ties the other." She added, "People who have had double-eyelid surgery in North Korea often can’t fully close their eyes at night and end up sleeping with their eyes open."
Han Song-i, who defected in 2013, became known to the public through appearances on programs such as Channel A’s "Now On My Way to Meet You."
