[Financial News] The court has approved a live broadcast of the first-instance sentencing for former President Yoon Suk Yeol, who faces charges related to the December 3 martial law declaration.
According to the legal community on the 11th, Criminal Division 25 of the Seoul Central District Court, presided over by Judge Ji Gui-yeon, approved live broadcasting of the first-instance sentencing scheduled for the 19th in Yoon’s case on charges including leading an insurrection and abuse of power and obstruction of the exercise of rights. Along with Yoon, former Minister of National Defense Kim Yong-hyun and former Commissioner General of the Korean National Police Agency Jo Jiho, among other top military and police leaders, will also receive verdicts on charges of insurrection involving key duties.
As a result, Yoon’s sentencing will be aired live by major broadcasters.
Prosecutors allege that Yoon colluded with former Minister Kim and others to declare unconstitutional and unlawful martial law, even though the legal requirements for martial law were not met, and that he incited an uprising with the aim of subverting the constitutional order.
He is also accused of mobilizing martial law troops and police to blockade the National Assembly in order to prevent a vote to lift martial law, and of attempting to arrest and detain key figures including Woo Won-shik, Speaker of the National Assembly, Lee Jae-myung of the Democratic Party of Korea, former People Power Party leader Han Dong-hoon, as well as staff of the National Election Commission (NEC).
The Special Prosecutor Team for Insurrection and Treason, led by special prosecutor Cho Eun-seok and in charge of Yoon’s trial, has asked the court to impose the death penalty on the former president.
