Bae Kyung-hoon, Deputy Prime Minister for Science and Technology and Minister of Science and ICT, said regarding the Coupang hacking incident, "Measures concerning Coupang are proceeding in accordance with the law and established principles," adding, "The government will respond thoroughly so that no diplomatic dispute arises between South Korea and the United States." At the full meeting of the National Assembly’s Science, ICT, Broadcasting and Communications Committee on the 11th, Bae was asked about concerns that the Coupang issue could spark tensions between South Korea and the United States. He replied, "It is the government’s duty to investigate and clarify the facts," and added, "We are also in ongoing communication with the U.S. government regarding the respective positions of the South Korean and U.S. governments."
He also addressed criticism that, compared with last year’s SK Telecom hacking incident—after which SK Telecom received a 50-day business suspension—domestic companies are in fact being discriminated against. He stressed, "We conducted a thorough investigation in order to establish the facts."
Bae went on to explain the previous day’s announcement of findings by the Public-Private Joint Investigation Team on the Coupang data breach. "In the Coupang incident, 33.67 million items of personal information in our country were leaked, and this figure includes access records," he said. "The number of violations of personal information rules will be announced later by the Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC)." He added, "We will determine through additional investigations how this leaked information was used, if at all."
