[Financial News] The Joint Police–Prosecution Task Force on Collusion with Religious Groups, led by Kim Tae-hoon, chief prosecutor of the Daejeon High Prosecutors’ Office, has summoned former Democratic Party of Korea lawmaker Jong-sung Lim over allegations that he received illicit funds from the Unification Church.
According to legal sources on the 11th, the task force began questioning Lim at 9 a.m. that day in his capacity as a suspect. This is the first time he has been investigated by the joint task force. Lim is suspected of receiving about 30 million won in cash and other benefits from the Unification Church ahead of the April 2020 general election, in alleged violation of the Political Funds Act.
Yoon Young-ho, former head of the Unification Church World Mission Headquarters, testified last August to the Special Counsel Team on Kim Keon Hee, led by Special Counsel Min Joong-gi, that he had provided money and valuables to Lim, Democratic Party lawmaker Jeon Jae-soo, and former United Future Party lawmaker Kyuhwan Kim. He stated that this was done, in his words, "to maintain good relations not only with the People Power Party but with politicians from both the ruling and opposition camps."
Lim has in fact been regarded as a politician with close ties to the Unification Church. He served as the Korea chair of the International Association of Parliamentarians for Peace (IAPP), an affiliated organization, and repeatedly attended forums and other events related to the Japan–Korea Undersea Tunnel project promoted by the church.
The joint task force is expected to question Lim in detail about his relationship with the Unification Church and whether any money or other benefits were exchanged.
