During this year’s Lunar New Year holiday, highway tolls across the country will be waived for four days. The measure is intended to ease transportation costs for people traveling for the holiday and to help stabilize household finances.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on the 10th that a proposal to waive highway tolls during the Lunar New Year holiday was approved at a Cabinet meeting. As a result, from 12:00 a.m. on February 15 to 12:00 a.m. on February 19, all vehicles using any section of the national expressway network will be exempt from tolls. The exemption applies to all vehicles, regardless of type, as long as they use the expressways.
For vehicles using the Hi-Pass electronic toll collection system, tolls will be automatically waived if they pass through tollgates with the onboard unit switched on. Drivers using manual toll lanes should take a ticket at the entry tollgate and simply hand it in at the exit tollgate. Even if a vehicle enters or exits the expressway before or after the exemption period, no toll will be charged as long as any part of the trip falls within the designated period.
Lee Woo-je, Director General for Roads at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, warned, "During the Lunar New Year holiday, increased traffic volumes and icy road conditions can significantly raise the risk of traffic accidents," and urged, "Please observe traffic regulations and drive safely when traveling to and from your hometowns."
