According to Financial News, President Lee Jae-myung said on the 10th, "There seems to be far too much backlog in the perjury cases referred by the National Assembly. The truth needs to be determined quickly so that the National Assembly can properly fulfill its role," calling for faster handling of these cases.
At the fifth State Council meeting held that day at the presidential office, President Lee stated, "Facts are crucial in a democracy. People make decisions based on the information they are given, but if they are given false information, it becomes difficult to make sound judgments, and that ultimately distorts the exercise of sovereignty by the people."
He went on to describe the National Assembly as "a representative body of the people" and stressed that "everything that takes place in the National Assembly carries great significance." He added, "When the National Assembly makes decisions, it undertakes various efforts to uncover what the truth is and what the facts are. For example, it holds confirmation hearings or parliamentary investigations."
President Lee pointed out that, in recent parliamentary proceedings, "There have been far too many cases where people tell blatant lies that undermine the authority of the National Assembly, or simply fail to appear without any reason, thereby disregarding the Assembly's authority." He continued, "It does not matter whether this is favorable to the ruling party or the opposition. This is an issue concerning the powers and authority of the National Assembly as a core institution that forms part of our constitutional order."
Referring in particular to delays in handling perjury referrals, he emphasized, "It is essential to determine swiftly whether the statements were true or false, and whether the conduct was justified or unjustified." President Lee concluded, "I ask that you pay special attention to this matter."
