[Financial News] At a recent multicultural event held at an elementary school in the United States, a Rising Sun Flag was hung, prompting Korean parents to lodge complaints with the school.
Seo Kyoung-duk, a professor at Sungshin Women’s University, stated on the 9th, "This was reported by a Korean resident in the United States. It happened during a 'Multicultural Night' event at an elementary school near Austin in the state of Texas."
"Multicultural Night" is an annual event at the school where parents and children from each country prepare together to showcase their own culture. Each country’s booth presents traditional clothing, food, performances, and crafts, while parents volunteer with their children to introduce their home culture. This year’s event was held on the 5th (local time).
Professor Seo explained, "At the Japan booth of this meaningful event, the Rising Sun Flag, a symbol of imperialism, was displayed. Korean parents have sent protest emails to the school."
The Rising Sun Flag was used by Japan at the forefront of its invasions of Asian countries and is widely regarded as a symbol of militarism and imperialism.
Professor Seo noted, "Over the past several years, similar situations have frequently occurred at elementary, middle, and high schools in various countries, including the United States, Canada, and New Zealand," adding, "Each time, Korean parents and students have joined forces to have the Rising Sun Flag removed."
He went on to say, "It is deeply concerning that such incidents keep happening at schools where children from many different countries are educated. The fundamental problem is that the Japanese government has failed to properly teach its citizens the accurate historical background of the Rising Sun Flag," and stressed, "If Japanese parents and children had received proper education about their country’s history as a perpetrator, they would not so brazenly display the Rising Sun Flag at events like this."
