[Financial News] Park Seong-ju, chief of the National Office of Investigation at the Korean National Police Agency (KNPA), will visit China to strengthen cooperation on transnational crime.
According to the KNPA on the 9th, Park will depart that day for a three-day visit to the Ministry of Public Security of the People's Republic of China (MPS), returning on the 11th.
The visit is a follow-up to a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed between the KNPA and the MPS on the occasion of the Korea–China summit held during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meetings. The two sides plan to conclude an annex setting out concrete implementation measures so that their cooperation in combating crime can function effectively in the field.
The annex will include practical cooperation mechanisms such as designating dedicated liaison points at each agency and holding regular working-level meetings. The KNPA explained that this will establish an institutional foundation for more stable and sustained responses to transnational crime.
In addition, Park plans to discuss with the MPS concrete joint investigation measures, including sharing information on voice phishing (vishing) crimes, tracing criminal proceeds, and apprehending fugitives who have fled overseas.
A KNPA official stated, "Going forward, we will continue to pursue international cooperation, block criminal methods, and conduct rigorous investigations, with the government-wide task force on transnational crime (TF) playing a central role."
Earlier, in November last year, the KNPA and the MPS signed a "MOU on Responding to Voice Phishing and Online Fraud" on the sidelines of the Korea–China summit held in Gyeongju. The two countries agreed to cooperate, within the bounds permitted by their respective laws, in areas such as collecting, exchanging, and analyzing information and evidence related to scam crime hubs; conducting joint operations and coordinated investigations to track and arrest offenders; rescuing, protecting, and repatriating victims; and tracing and freezing criminal funds.
