The People Power Party announced on the 5th that it will push for a Special Prosecutor Act to investigate why prosecutors decided not to appeal the Daejang-dong and Wirye New Town cases.
At the supreme council meeting held at the National Assembly, Song Eon-seok said, "Prosecutors have given up on appealing the first-trial not-guilty ruling for the Wirye New Town group, which served as a rehearsal for Daejang-dong." He continued, "The full picture is emerging of a build-up designed to completely erase, through withdrawal of the indictment, the corruption trial of President Lee Jae-myung that combines the three cases of Daejang-dong, Baekhyeon-dong, and Wirye New Town."
Song noted, "The Wirye New Town group is made up almost identically to the Daejang-dong group, including Nam Wook, Dong-gyu Yu, and Jeong Young-hak." He added, "Because the reasoning for acquittal differs from that in the Daejang-dong case, many expected prosecutors to appeal, but they chose not to."
He went on, "They gave up appealing the Daejang-dong case, gave up appealing the Wirye New Town case, gave up appealing the case over the killing of a public official in the West Sea under President Moon Jae-in, and even gave up appealing the case of personnel interference at KOSME by the presidential senior secretary for personnel affairs in the Moon Jae-in administration. This is effectively a blanket declaration that they will abandon efforts to uncover the truth behind all these crimes." He argued, "At this point, the problem is not that prosecutors are giving up appeals, but that they are giving up on themselves."
Song added, "With the dismantling of the Prosecutors' Office looming, they have abandoned their passion for uncovering crime, lost the courage to resist political pressure from the administration, and are now voluntarily walking away from investigations into those in power."
He continued, "I am reminded of the words of Presiding Judge Woo In-seong, who said, 'In the application of the law, there must be no exceptions or discrimination, whether for those in power or those who have lost power.'" He stressed, "We must restore judicial justice in the Daejang-dong and Wirye New Town cases, which are directly linked to President Lee Jae-myung's trial." He added, "Yesterday (the 4th), Representative Jang Dong-hyuk, in his policy speech as leader of a negotiating bloc in the National Assembly, proposed a special prosecutor to investigate the decision not to appeal. The People Power Party will push for a Special Prosecutor Act to uncover the truth behind the decision not to appeal in the Daejang-dong and Wirye New Town cases, which was aimed at enriching the Daejang-dong group and eliminating President Lee Jae-myung's trial."
