On the 2nd (local time), Stars and Stripes, the official newspaper of the United States Department of Defense (DoD), reported that "the United States has established 'Space Force North,' a Northern Command space component responsible for the U.S. homeland, Greenland and surrounding areas."
Space Force North, which falls under U.S. Northern Command, is the seventh service component command created by the U.S. military. A service component command is assigned to a specific combatant command and is responsible for organizing and providing that service’s forces in a specialized way.
The Northern Command space unit is the first space component dedicated to the direct defense of the U.S. homeland. Its area of responsibility includes the United States, Canada, Mexico, Greenland and parts of the Caribbean. Its core missions are missile warning and tracking, satellite control, space domain awareness, electronic warfare, and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance.
The creation of Space Force North is drawing attention because it comes just days after the establishment of 'Space Force South' under U.S. Southern Command. Analysts say that by extending its posture from land and sea into space, Washington is effectively bringing outer space under the umbrella of Trump’s so‐called "Donroe Doctrine"—Donald Trump’s approach to reinforcing U.S. dominance in the Western Hemisphere.
Stars and Stripes also noted that "the back‐to‐back establishment of the Northern and Southern space component commands aligns with the DoD’s priority of strengthening its strategic advantages in the Western Hemisphere."
The Trump administration’s recently released National Defense Strategy (NDS) and National Security Strategy (NSS) likewise spell out a policy line of reinforcing control over the entire Western Hemisphere.
Chief of Space Operations Chance Saltzman said, "We are now on track to establish service component commands for all unified combatant commands, and through this we will further strengthen our expertise and force‐employment capabilities to deter conflict and win wars."
