Financial News reported on the 4th that law firm Hwawoo has hired attorney Kang Beom-gu, an expert in real estate investment trusts (REITs), real estate project finance (PF), urban redevelopment, and land compensation, as a partner.
After completing the Judicial Research and Training Institute, Kang joined the Korea Appraisal Board, now the Korea Real Estate Board (KREB), in 2011 and worked there for about 14 years, serving as head of the Legal Support Department and head of the REITs Review Department. While at KREB, he led the department in charge of REITs review, overseeing licensing and approval for asset management companies (AMCs) and the establishment of REITs. As the most senior in-house attorney and head of the Legal Support Department, he handled legislation and advisory work across real estate finance and public-sector real estate policy.
He also oversaw the design of major real estate systems and legal revisions, including the Real Estate Investment Company Act, the introduction of project REITs, and the establishment of REITs supervision and inspection frameworks. In doing so, he worked closely with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and directly participated in key institutional reforms.
Hwawoo expects that bringing Kang on board will significantly strengthen its advisory capabilities in areas such as licensing for REITs and real estate asset management companies, real estate finance and PF, urban redevelopment, and land compensation. Based on his extensive hands-on experience at a public institution, the firm believes his understanding of systems and insight into policy trends will enable it to provide clients with more practical and strategic advice in an increasingly complex real estate finance and development environment.
Managing partner Lee Myung-soo stated, "The REITs, real estate finance, and urban redevelopment sectors are directly affected by policy and regulatory changes, so the role of experts who understand both practice and legislation is becoming ever more important," adding, "With attorney Kang Beom-gu joining us, Hwawoo is now able to offer comprehensive legal services in REITs and real estate finance, urban redevelopment, and land compensation, covering everything from licensing and regulatory compliance to dispute resolution."
