[Financial News] On the 4th, President Lee Jae-myung posted another message on social media for the fifth consecutive day, targeting multiple-home owners and real estate speculation.
Posting on X (formerly Twitter), he wrote, "This has been scheduled to end every year for the past four years, so isn’t it the responsibility of multiple-home owners who failed to prepare?" He added, "Rather than multiple-home owners who speculated on real estate and unfairly expected yet another extension, citizens suffering from soaring housing prices should be given greater consideration."
His remarks signal that he is drawing a clear line against expectations of extending the temporary suspension of heavier Capital Gains Tax rates, which is set to expire on May 9. Since January 31, the president has posted comments about real estate on social media for five days in a row.
On this day, Lee shared an editorial about the difficulties multiple-home owners face when trying to sell properties that still have tenants, and he added the above comments. The editorial pointed out that, with the temporary suspension of heavier Capital Gains Tax on multiple-home owners ending on May 9, sales could be blocked by requirements such as the owner-occupation rule in Land Transaction Permit Zones and existing lease contracts, even when owners want to sell.
The editorial explained the president’s recent stance by saying, "If multiple-home owners do not sell their homes by May 9, when the temporary suspension of heavier Capital Gains Tax ends, it means they will suffer major losses later." At the same time, it called for institutional supplements for properties being sold with tenants still in place.
