[Financial News] Police investigating allegations that independent lawmaker Kim Byung-ki sought to have his second son hired have summoned officials from the virtual asset exchange Bithumb.
According to Financial News reporting on the 3rd, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency (SMPA) Public Crime Investigation Unit questioned Bithumb executive A as a witness that day, and plans to additionally summon company official B for questioning on the 4th.
Investigators plan to ask them whether Kim actually requested personnel favors related to his son’s employment, and whether any undue influence was exerted over the overall hiring process.
Kim is suspected of having approached both Bithumb and its rival Dunamu in an attempt to secure a job for his second son at a virtual asset-related company. His son is known to have joined Bithumb last year.
Police are also looking into why Kim, while serving on the National Assembly’s National Policy Committee during the period his son worked at Bithumb, repeatedly directed questions at Dunamu, Bithumb’s competitor. At committee meetings at the time, Kim raised concerns about monopolistic practices in the virtual asset exchange market and made remarks criticizing Dunamu.
Bithumb has reportedly stated that there were no problems with the hiring process.
