According to The Financial News, the People Power Party (PPP) on the 3rd criticized President Lee Jae-myung for issuing policy messages through his social networking service (SNS) accounts, calling them "neither prudent nor carefully considered" and saying he "should show more restraint."
Song Eon-seok, the PPP floor leader, said at a party strategy meeting held at the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea that there were reports "that the government of the Kingdom of Cambodia summoned the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to the Kingdom of Cambodia to lodge a protest over President Lee’s SNS post in the Khmer language saying, 'Anyone who touches Koreans will be ruined.'"
On the 30th of last month, President Lee Jae-myung had posted on SNS, citing a news report that a Chinese crime syndicate operating in the Kingdom of Cambodia had stopped recruiting Korean members for fear of crackdowns by Korean police. In that post, written in the Khmer language, he warned, "If you touch Koreans, you will be ruined. Does that sound like an empty threat?" and stressed his directive for a tough response to transnational scam crimes. The post has since been deleted.
Regarding this, Song Eon-seok denounced it as "an unprecedented diplomatic embarrassment." He argued, "The kidnapping incident that occurred in the Kingdom of Cambodia was fundamentally a crime committed by a Chinese crime syndicate. The fact that not a single aide in Cheong Wa Dae (the Blue House) or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs warned the president that writing about this in the Khmer language could provoke a backlash from the Cambodian government is itself a serious problem."
He went on to say, "President Lee Jae-myung’s style of SNS politics is lurching from one mishap to another across the economy, diplomacy, and society." He added, "With an off-the-cuff message, he sparked controversy over a sugar tax and caused great confusion in the related industries. On real estate, he talked about a 'last chance' and issued what amounted to a threatening message, creating enormous turmoil in the market."
Before the meeting, floor leader Song Eon-seok, deputy floor leader for policy Kim Eun-hye, and other members of the party leadership brought actual sugar to the venue and referred to the sugar tax as they criticized President Lee’s use of SNS.
