[The Financial News] Separate from the three-way talks among the United States of America (US), Russia, and Ukraine, the Ukrainian delegation has agreed to hold bilateral talks with the US to discuss terms for ending the war.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on social media on the 2nd (local time), "Ukraine is ready to move to practical steps," announcing the decision.
The bilateral talks are expected to focus on US security guarantees and plans for Ukraine’s economic reconstruction after the war. Zelenskyy stated, "We consider the US security guarantee document to be in a completed state," reaffirming his earlier position that what remains is essentially just the "signature."
However, some observers argue that the three-way talks among the US, Russia, and Ukraine have reached an impasse, as Washington is allegedly pressuring Kyiv to concede territory demanded by Russia in exchange for security guarantees. On this point, Zelenskyy said, "We also hope to hold additional, substantive consultations on documents related to economic recovery and development."
He offered a positive assessment of the US-brokered measure to halt attacks on energy facilities. Zelenskyy explained, "It is helping to build trust in both the negotiation process and its outcomes."
Meanwhile, the three-way talks in which Russia and Ukraine will discuss a possible end-of-war arrangement under US mediation are scheduled to take place in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE), on the 4th and 5th.
