[The Financial News] Protests sparked by a shooting by immigration authorities in Minneapolis, State of Minnesota, are spreading across the United States of America (U.S.).
According to The Associated Press (AP) and other foreign media on the 30th (local time), demonstrations opposing the Donald Trump administration's immigration crackdowns were held in Minneapolis as well as New York City (NYC), Los Angeles, Chicago, and Washington, D.C.
The protests are being organized by a group called "National Shutdown." The organization has adopted the slogan, "Don't work, don't go to school, and don't shop."
That day, hundreds of citizens gathered at the Bishop Henry Whipple Federal Building on the outskirts of Minneapolis. Protesters shouted at Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officers, telling them, "Get out of Minnesota."
Some businesses are closing for the day in solidarity with the protests or pledging to donate their daily proceeds to support immigrant communities. One restaurant in New York City (NYC) announced it would donate 50% of its profits from that day's operations to an immigrant coalition.
At Groves High School in Michigan, dozens of students declared on Tuesday morning that they would refuse to attend classes to protest U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
In Los Angeles (LA), which became one of the first targets of the Trump administration's immigration raids in June last year, thousands of citizens gathered and marched.
In some areas, people have been seen wearing knit caps embroidered with the phrase "Melt the ICE." The design originated at a local shop in Minneapolis. More than 85,000 orders had been placed by mid-month, and the proceeds are expected to be used to support local immigrant communities.
