[Financial News] The funeral for the late former Prime Minister Lee Hae-chan was held with due solemnity on the 31st.
The send-off ceremony began at 6:30 a.m. at the funeral hall of Seoul National University Hospital, attended by bereaved family members and about 30 political figures.
Former Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum and Minister of the Interior and Safety Yun Ho-jung, who had served as chief mourners during the funeral period, each bowed twice before the deceased ahead of the start of the send-off ceremony.
Prime Minister Kim Min-seok, National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik, Presidential Political Affairs Advisor Cho Jeong-sik, and Democratic Party of Korea leader Jung Chung-rae also paid their respects before the portrait of the deceased.
As the send-off began, the military honor guard carried out the portrait of the deceased, followed by the Mugunghwa Medal of the Order of Civil Merit, which President Lee Jae-myung of South Korea had posthumously awarded.
Democratic Party of Korea floor leader Han Byung-do; lawmakers Choo Mi-ae, Kim Tae-nyeon, Kim Young-bae, and Han Min-soo; ministers Yun Ho-jung and Kwon Oh-eul; and party leader Cho Kuk were waiting in front of the hearse. When the rear door of the hearse carrying the coffin was closed, they all observed a moment of silent prayer together to mourn his final journey.
Following the send-off, a farewell ceremony is scheduled to be held at 9 a.m. at the Members' Office Building of the National Assembly. Before that, traditional memorial rites (noje) will be held in succession at the office of the Peaceful Unification Advisory Council (PUAC) and at the headquarters of the Democratic Party of Korea. After cremation at Seoul Memorial Park in Seocho-dong, the late Lee Hae-chan will be laid to rest at Eunhasu Park in Sejong Special Self-Governing City.
