Financial News reported that Kang Hoon-sik, serving as President Lee Jae Myung's special envoy for strategic economic cooperation and currently visiting Norway, announced the signing of a contract for the Norwegian government to purchase the Korean-made K239 Chunmoo multiple rocket launcher system, stating, "We have firmly established a bridgehead for entry into Northern Europe."
On the 30th, Kang wrote on social media that, following project approval by the Norwegian government and parliament, a contract worth 1.3 trillion won had finally been signed. He added that this is "the largest export deal to a Northern European country."
Kang recalled, "As soon as I was appointed a presidential special envoy last October, I visited the Republic of Poland, Romania, and Norway on a five-day, three-night schedule. That visit has led to a tangible outcome in the form of this contract in just about 100 days, for which I am truly grateful and deeply moved."
During this trip, Kang also met with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and delivered a personal letter from President Lee. He then held back-to-back meetings with senior officials, including the Norwegian foreign minister and the political state secretary at the Ministry of Defence.
Kang is scheduled to return to Korea on the afternoon of the 31st via Incheon International Airport after completing his visits to Canada, Norway, and other destinations.
The Royal Norwegian Ministry of Defence has selected Hanwha Aerospace as the final contractor for the 19 billion kroner (2.8 trillion won) Long-Range Precision Fire System (LRPFS) program and signed the contract on the 30th, local time. Excluding the cost of purchasing the K239 Chunmoo multiple rocket launcher system, the remaining project budget will be used by the Norwegian military for related force integration, including necessary expenses and infrastructure development.
