According to The Financial News, a woman in her 50s was run over by a vehicle in a parking lot at a large supermarket in Daedeok District, Daejeon, but quick action by people at the scene prevented loss of life.
Daejeon Daedeok Police Station stated that on the 15th of last month, it received a report from a large supermarket parking lot in Sintanjin-dong that "a pedestrian has been run over by a vehicle."
At the time, a woman in her 50s, identified only as A, had finished shopping and was walking while carrying her groceries. As she reached the entrance, she bent down to rearrange her bags. At that moment, she was struck by a sport utility vehicle (SUV), and her leg became trapped under the vehicle.
Immediately after the accident, citizens who witnessed the scene ran to the vehicle and began rescue efforts.
One citizen tried to lift the front of the vehicle, but when it proved too heavy, he shouted to those nearby, "Help me!" Responding to the urgent cry, people around the area joined one by one. Employees inside the supermarket also rushed out to lend a hand.
Around ten citizens pressed their bodies against the front of the SUV and, moving in unison to a shouted count, managed to lift the vehicle together. In that brief moment, another citizen pulled Ms. A out from underneath and rescued her.
Shortly afterward, the 119 Emergency Medical Service arrived, provided first aid to Ms. A, and transported her to a hospital. Her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
The citizens’ rescue efforts were captured on the parking lot’s closed-circuit television (CCTV) and on a vehicle’s dashboard camera.
A police investigation found that the SUV’s driver, a man in his 50s identified only as B, had been picking up an item that had fallen inside the vehicle and failed to see Ms. A bending over near the entrance.
