[Financial News] Izakaya (居酒屋) means a house (屋) with (居) alcohol (酒). If you travel in Japan, you will easily come across an izakaya on every street with its lights never turning off until late at night. It is common to see people unwinding after a day of work with light snacks and beer, sours, sake, etc.
Author Kazuhiko Ota, who has explored izakayas across Japan from Hokkaido to Okinawa for over 40 years, has published 'Japanese Izakaya Heritage.' This two-volume book documents long-established izakayas across Japan, with sections covering Eastern Japan (Hokkaido, Yamagata, Tokyo, etc.) and Western Japan (Aichi, Kyoto, Fukuoka, etc.).
The author unravels various stories related to izakayas, including their architecture, objects, and regulars. Moving beyond the simple nature of a guidebook introducing pubs, the book highlights their character as spaces where time and life have accumulated.
