[The Financial News] After U.S. President Donald Trump made remarks seen as tolerating a weaker dollar, the won-dollar exchange rate fell into the 1,430 won range.
On the Seoul foreign exchange market on the 28th, the won-dollar rate opened at 1,431.0 won, down 15.2 won from the previous session. It is still trading in the low 1,430 won range.
Given that the rate briefly rose above 1,450 won during the previous day’s session, the overall level has been adjusted sharply lower.
Earlier on the 27th (local time), Trump commented on the dollar’s decline, saying, "I don’t think the dollar has fallen significantly," while also arguing that the United States is being hurt by the weaker currencies of Asian countries such as China and Japan.
Following his remarks, the U.S. Dollar Index (DXY), which measures the dollar against six major currencies including the Japanese yen, retreated toward the 95 level and extended its weakness.
