[Financial News] On the 27th (local time), U.S. President Donald Trump said of Cuba, "It will fall soon. Cuba is effectively a country on the verge of collapse." His remarks came as Cuba is being mentioned as the Trump administration's next target for regime change following the recent change of government in Venezuela.
That day, President Trump was visiting the state of Iowa and met reporters at a restaurant before delivering an economic speech. He said, "We will see what happens in Cuba," making the above comments.
He went on to say, "Cuba has been receiving financial support from Venezuela and has also been supplied with oil," adding, "Now it is no longer receiving those."
U.S. media outlets have suggested that, after Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro was ousted earlier this month in a surprise U.S. military operation, President Trump is now considering Cuba as the next target for regime change.
The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported on the 21st that the Trump administration is looking for intermediaries to enter negotiations aimed at transferring power in Cuba following the regime change in Venezuela.
Politico reported on the 23rd that the Trump administration is reviewing a maritime blockade to cut off Cuba's crude oil imports as a way to pressure its economy. Cuba's economy is already believed to be facing severe difficulties due to disruptions in oil supplies.
