[Financial News] A shooting involving a federal immigration enforcement officer in a border area in the southern part of the State of Arizona has left one person in critical condition. A series of recent incidents across the United States in which immigration officers have used firearms is reigniting debate over enforcement tactics and accountability.
According to NBC and local station KVOA, the shooting occurred at around 7:30 a.m. on the 27th, local time, near the border in Pima County, Arizona. One person at the scene suffered gunshot wounds, received emergency treatment, and was airlifted by medical helicopter to a nearby hospital, where they were reported to be in critical condition.
The Pima County Sheriff's Department stated that the United States Border Patrol was involved in the shooting. Border Patrol agents were present at the scene at the time of the incident. However, the identity of the injured person and the precise sequence of events have not yet been made public.
The Pima County Sheriff's Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) are conducting a joint investigation. Key questions include whether the use of firearms by an agency under the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) was justified and whether any operational rules were violated during the incident.
This case is adding to the fallout from a series of recent shootings and deaths involving federal immigration enforcement officers. On the 24th, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, a United States Border Patrol agent shot and killed Alexander "Alex" Jeffrey Pretty, an American man in his 30s. Earlier, on the 7th, a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer shot and killed Renee Nicole Good, an American woman also in her 30s.
These incidents have sparked intense protests across the United States and fueled criticism of the Donald Trump administration’s hard-line immigration enforcement policies and the use of force by officers under the Department of Homeland Security.
The Washington Post (WP) reported that since July of last year there have been 16 cases in which federal officers under the Department of Homeland Security used firearms during arrests or in response to protests. At least 10 people, including four U.S. citizens, were shot in these incidents, and three of them died.
However, WP reported that not a single officer from ICE or the United States Border Patrol has faced criminal charges or disciplinary action in connection with these cases. Structural impunity and the lack of accountability surrounding the use of firearms by federal immigration enforcement officers are once again under scrutiny.
