[The Financial News] Japanese television personality Dewi Sukarno (real name Ratna Sari Dewi Sukarno) has been referred to prosecutors on charges of assaulting her former manager.
According to The Asahi Shimbun and other local media on the 27th, the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department (TMPD) sent Dewi Sukarno to prosecutors without arrest on suspicion of causing bodily injury.
She is accused of assaulting her manager, a man in his 30s identified as A, at an animal hospital in Shibuya, Tokyo, in October last year.
At the time, Dewi Sukarno's pet dog's health suddenly deteriorated, and A took the animal to the hospital, but it ultimately died. Afterward, a heated argument broke out between Dewi Sukarno and A over the dog's treatment and final moments. Investigators found that she struck A in the face with her hand and kicked him, causing injuries that required about two weeks of medical treatment.
As the controversy grew following the reports, an official at Dewi Sukarno's agency stated, "It was by no means a one-sided beating or assault as reported," adding, "We are currently discussing how to respond going forward."
The official went on, "In particular, as an 85-year-old elderly woman, she was in no condition to use physical force," and stressed, "She merely pointed her foot toward the door to tell him to leave. It was not a kick, and her foot did not make contact with the manager's body."
Dewi Sukarno also addressed the issue directly on her social media, saying, "I have never engaged in any violence such as 'hitting or kicking.' If the animal hospital's CCTV footage is released, this can be confirmed." She appealed, "I am deeply disturbed by the fact that I am being unilaterally treated as a violent offender and that this is being widely reported, and I am suffering enormous damage as a result."
Dewi Sukarno is known in Japan as a queen of high society. At 19, while working at a café, she met Indonesia's first president, Sukarno, and became his third wife. Later, her outspoken and uninhibited remarks made her a popular guest on Japanese variety shows.
