The Financial News reported that the Joint Military-Police Investigation Task Force (TF) is summoning and questioning suspects accused of sending unmanned aerial vehicles to North Korea.
According to police and other sources on the 26th, the Joint Military-Police Investigation Task Force summoned a man identified only by his surname Kim for questioning that morning. Kim, who served as a director in charge of North Korea-related affairs at the drone manufacturer Estel Engineering, is suspected of violating the Aviation Safety Act and the Protection of Military Bases and Installations Act. This is the first time he has been questioned as a suspect.
The TF is also re-questioning a man in his 30s, identified by his surname Oh, a graduate student who faces the same charges. This is the second time Oh has been summoned, following his initial questioning on the 24th.
Oh appeared on a television program on the 16th and claimed that he had sent drones to North Korea. He said he decided to give the interview after seeing the TF summon another suspect, a man identified by his surname Jang, for questioning as a person of interest.
Oh and Jang, who are senior and junior at the same private university in Seoul, founded Estel Engineering in 2024 with support from their school and became director and CEO, respectively. Kim has been serving as the company’s director in charge of North Korea-related affairs.
On the 21st, police carried out searches and seizures at six locations, including Oh’s residence and a university research lab that had served as Estel Engineering’s office. Investigators are currently analyzing the seized materials.
On the 23rd, authorities also imposed travel bans on all three individuals, preventing them from leaving the country.
