"Korean companies already see Canada as a trusted, key partner. We expect that expanding cooperation between our two countries will provide an important foundation for strengthening supply chain resilience, creating jobs in both countries, and enhancing our global competitiveness."
Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Kim Jung-kwan made these remarks on the 26th (local time) at the Korea-Canada Industrial Cooperation Forum held at the Park Hyatt Toronto in Toronto, Canada.
The forum brought together leading automotive industry executives from Korea and Canada, along with Chief Presidential Secretary Kang Hoon-sik, Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Kim Jung-kwan, and Defense Acquisition Program Administration Commissioner Lee Yong-chul. From the Canadian side, participants included Philip Jennings, Deputy Minister at Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED), and Victor Fedeli, Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade of Ontario, as well as officials from the federal and provincial governments.
During the forum, the two countries discussed a range of measures to strengthen cooperation in future mobility sectors such as eco-friendly vehicles and autonomous vehicles. Minister Kim stressed, "The automotive industry is a core backbone industry that runs through both our economies, and we will help the automotive sectors of our two countries seek opportunities together and grow side by side."
On the sidelines of the forum, a total of six Memorandums of Understanding (MOU) were signed between Korean and Canadian companies in key industrial fields. The MOUs cover steel (Hanwha Ocean–Algoma Steel), low Earth orbit satellites (Hanwha Systems–Telesat, Hanwha Systems–MDA), artificial intelligence (Hanwha Ocean–Hanwha Systems–Cohere), advanced sensors (Hanwha Systems–PV Labs), and rare earth development (POSCO International–Torngat Metals). These agreements span a wide range of advanced and strategic industries and are expected to further deepen bilateral cooperation.
The 3rd Korea–Canada CEO Dialogue, hosted by The Federation of Korean Industries (FKI) and the Business Council of Canada, was held immediately afterward. CEOs from 12 Korean companies and 9 Canadian companies that are pursuing or planning mutual cooperation attended and exchanged views on the outlook for economic cooperation between the two countries in advanced and strategic industries.
