[Financial News] Police stated that regarding independent lawmaker Kim Byung-kee, who is embroiled in a series of misconduct allegations, they "plan to summon him as soon as preparations for the investigation are complete."
Park Jeong-bo, commissioner of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency (SMPA), said at a regular briefing on the 26th, "We have carried out almost all of the necessary search-and-seizure operations regarding the 13 allegations against Representative Kim."
Commissioner Park explained, "We are investigating 13 allegations, and there are also many others of a different nature, so the entire Public Investigation Unit is working on the case day and night," adding, "We will conduct the investigation without hesitation, in a strict and thorough manner, and do our utmost to ensure that no suspicions remain."
Representative Kim faces allegations including receiving 30 million won from Dongjak District Council members in exchange for a party nomination; accepting hotel vouchers from Korean Air and requesting special protocol treatment; having an expensive meal with the CEO of Coupang; intervening in his eldest son's hiring at the National Intelligence Service (NIS); using his aides for his eldest son's work at the NIS; intervening in his younger son's transfer to Soongsil University; and misusing his wife's business promotion expenses and trying to have the related investigation dropped. So far, police have questioned eight suspects and 25 witnesses in cases related to Representative Kim.
Police also stated that they are strictly investigating, in accordance with procedure, independent lawmaker Kang Sun-woo and Seoul Metropolitan Council member Kim Kyung, who are both suspected of involvement in a nomination bribe.
Council member Kim is suspected of giving 100 million won in nomination bribes to Representative Kang and later getting the money back. On the 19th, the police also received from the Seoul Metropolitan Election Commission portions of an audio recording that allegedly contain additional lobbying attempts by Council member Kim.
Commissioner Park noted, "We have secured the necessary materials through various search-and-seizure operations and are analyzing them," adding, "We will continue the investigation in a calm and methodical manner."
