The Financial News reported that police have launched a raid in connection with allegations that Seoul Metropolitan Council member Kim Kyung was involved in an additional cash delivery. This case is said to be separate from the alleged money delivery involving former Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) lawmaker Kang Sun-woo.
According to police and other sources on the 24th, the Public Crime Investigation Unit of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency (SMPA) began conducting searches around 8:40 a.m. that day. Officers are sequentially raiding five locations, including Kim’s residence in Hwagok-dong, Gangseo-gu, Seoul, the home of former Seoul Metropolitan Council Chair Yang, and the Seoul Metropolitan Council Members’ Office Building.
The raids are linked to a case that the Seoul Metropolitan Election Commission referred to the police around the 19th. Earlier, the police received a complaint from the Seoul Metropolitan Election Commission regarding Council member Kim and a former Seoul Metropolitan Council official identified only as Mr. A.
Police are reported to have obtained an audio recording that appears to capture Kim and Mr. A discussing to whom money should be delivered ahead of the Seoul Gangseo-gu mayoral by-election held in October 2023.
Kim’s side maintains that no money was provided in connection with the Gangseo-gu mayoral by-election, under any pretext.
Separately, Kim is under police investigation on suspicion of having delivered a 100 million won bribe to then-DPK lawmaker Kang Sun-woo in connection with securing the party nomination for Seoul Metropolitan Council in the June 2022 local elections.
