Bugonia, the English-language remake of the 2003 Korean film Save the Green Planet! directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, has been nominated in four categories at the 98th Academy Awards (Oscars).
According to the list of nominees announced on the 22nd (local time) by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), Bugonia received nominations for Best Picture, Best Actress (Emma Stone), Original Score (Jerskin Fendrix), and Adapted Screenplay (Will Tracy).
Emma Stone has already won two Oscars for Best Actress for La La Land and for Poor Things, another collaboration with Lanthimos. With Bugonia, she now aims for a third win.
Bugonia is also a project in which CJ ENM, the investor and distributor of Save the Green Planet!, took part in planning and production. Following Celine Song's Past Lives, it marks a new chapter for the Korean film industry as it reaches audiences around the world.
CJ ENM led the development of Bugonia from the English-language remake script to packaging the director, cast, and production company, and handled domestic distribution.
Meanwhile, the title Bugonia comes from a Greek term referring to an ancient, mistaken belief that bees were born from the carcass of a dead cow, or to a ritual performed to obtain bees.
